If your vehicle is three years old, or more you are required by law to have an MOT (Ministry of Transport) test. The purpose of an MOT test is to ensure that your vehicle meets all minimum legal safety requirements for use on the public highway.
Your vehicle will have its MOT test carried out at our MOT centre, by a qualified MOT technician. All our MOT technicians are trained and tested by the DVSA {Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) who are the Government’s authorising body and we are able to carry out tests up to Class 7, including motorcycle tests.
The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is legibly displayed on the vehicle.
Your registration plates should be in a legible font that meets Government standards and they should be securely fitted to your vehicle.
The condition, operation, security and colour of your vehicles lights will be checked and also the aim of your headlights will be checked.
All steering and suspension components will be checked for their condition and operation.
Your vehicles wipers and washers will be checked to ensure that they operate properly and give you a clear view of the road.
The windscreen will be checked to ensure your view of the road is not impaired and that there are no chips (larger than 10mm) or cracks in the glass in the ‘swept’ area of the windscreen, (that being the area covered by your wiper blades).
The type of horn will be checked also making sure it is in working order.
All seatbelts including those in the rear of the vehicle will be checked for condition, operation, security and type, making sure that all compulsory seatbelts are in position.
The front seats of your vehicle will be checked for security.
The fuel system is checked during the MOT test It will be checked for any leaks and that the fuel cap closes and seals securely.
The exhaust emissions of your vehicle will be checked, ensuring that they are within the Government’s specified guidelines. The exhaust system needs to be in a complete and secure condition, without any serious leaks and also that it silences effectively.
Your vehicle will be checked for excessive corrosion or damage, if there are any obtrusive sharp edges then your vehicle may fail.
The MOT test will check that the doors open and close correctly and that the latches are secure. The front doors should open from both the inside and outside and the rear doors will need to be opened to gain access to check items such as the rear seatbelts.
The mirrors on your vehicle will be checked for condition and security.
The vehicle's wheels and tyres need to be checked for their condition, security, type and tyre size and the depth of tread.
The efficiency of the vehicle's braking performance, condition and operation will be checked on the rolling-road brake tester.
The result of each check will be recorded, when your vehicle passes its MOT test you will be issued with a pass certificate. If the vehicle fails to meet the governments minimum legal requirements on any aspect you will be issued with a fail document.
If your vehicle does fail its MOT test and you decide to leave it with us for repair before re-testing and it does not leave our premises there will be no charge for the re-test. But if your vehicle is taken away and has work carried out on it by a third party and it is not returned to us for a re-test within ten working days then the re-test will be chargeable.
If your vehicle has any issues that our technicians think need looking at but don’t quite warrant a fail document then they will issue you with an advisory document. This document will state any items that are not quite a failure, but are worthy of bringing to your attention, so that you are aware of them.
You can book your MOT test with us via telephone, online or you can pop in to see us in the workshop reception.
You can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date, also why not book your vehicle in for its service at the same time?
When your vehicle has had an MOT test carried out with us, we will automatically send you a reminder in twelve months time that your MOT test is due.
